The Canadian Montessori Academy Special-Needs Teacher Education Programme
offers Montessori certified teachers the opportunity to develop additional skills and
sensitivities that will enable them to effectively work with students with a variety a
special needs.

Programme of Study
Courses begin each August and run for two weeks. Lectures run from 8:00 to 5:00 daily.

This course is intended for graduates of a certified Montessori Teacher Education
Programme. The area of study and content requires an in-depth knowledge of
Montessori philosophy, concepts and hands-on experience as prerequisites.
Students will learn to adapt Montessori philosophies and materials to meet the unique
challenges that face students with special-needs. The course focuses on developing
the skills that a teacher requires in order to identify and prioritize specific goals for each
student and to develop and prepare individualized lesson plans.
Certification
Graduates from this programme will receive a certificate from the Canadian Montessori Academy Teacher Education Programme.

How to incorporate art, music and creativity in a special-needs curriculum
- Social Skills/Play Skills
- Understanding how to work with children who are experiencing developmental
difficulties including sensory motor development, cause and effect development,
and constructional development
- Learning how to define and explain appropriate facial expressions and emotions
- Understanding emotions in children and addressing the needs of children with
special needs (Theory of the Mind)
- Learning to use one child’s strengths to promote interaction with others
- Sensory Processing
- Identifying and observing children with sensory processing difficulties
- Recognizing and addressing processing difficulties including tactile, visual,
auditory, gustatory, vestibular, olfactory, and proprioceptive difficulties.
- Anxiety
- Recognizing and understanding anxiety in children with special needs.
- Using relaxation techniques, such as exercise, brain gym, yoga, massage and
nutrition, and intervention plans to remedy anxious feeling in a special-needs
environment
- Forming a parent partnership and educational programme that addresses
communication and support
