What is Montessori?
Dr. Maria Montessori based what is called "The Montessori Method of Education" on her scientific observations of young children's behavior.
The philosophy of the Montessori Method is that a child learns best in an environment that makes the child happy and that encourages each individual's unique development. This way of learning starts early. The Montessori teacher creates a "prepared environment" supported by specialized Montessori materials. These self-correcting materials help children to teach themselves and gain self-confidence.
What makes Montessori education unique?
Your child receives individualized
attention, with a child/teacher ratio of about one to twelve.
The main goal is to help each child reach
his or her full potential in all areas of life. Montessori
trained teachers promote the development of social skills,
emotional growth, physical co-ordination and learning skills.
Everything about the Montessori system -the teacher, the room, the materials, and the social climate- is
designed to make the child feel comfortable. This environment
allows the child to try new things and build self-confidence.
Dr. Montessori studied the kinds of toys
children like to play with, and used this knowledge to design
Montessori materials.
